Saturday Night Live Music: "Bad is Bad"

I make no apologies whatsoever for continuing to love Huey Lewis and the News's music. They came to the Kansas State Fair a couple of years back, and I kick myself for having missed them. When they were hot in the early to mid-80s, as they were in this show, there arguably was no better pop-music-making garage band out there.

Huey came to our little podunk town 3 years ago and he was as excellent a showman as ever. His voice still sounded great and he still made rockin' look effortless. Seriously, one of the best concerts I've been to.

I don't get it. He and his band are competent. That's a virtue in a post-punk world but there is so much inspired music out there, why settle for competence. It's like choosing Jan and Dean over the Beach Boys or Herman's Hermits over the Beatles, Stones or the Who.
