Friday Morning Videos: "Only You" (Original and A Cappella)

Remember this wonderful video?

No you don't--it was never released as a video, only made available to stores and record companies as a promotion for the single. But the song is beautiful (better than any other single tune Vince Clark ever wrote while in Depeche Mode or Erasure, I think), and after my friend Dan Weingarten reminded me of it, I had to include it in FMV.

Actually though, Dan didn't remind me of it; what he did was recommend this a capella number...

...which was a much bigger hit than the Yaz original, and which I did remember, and which then sent me back to the Vince Clark/Alison Moyet version. Funny how pop tunes come around, isn't it?

I keep trying to get the girls to sing this for graduation. They never do it.

I mostly grew up in the 80's and remain fond of a lot of the music. But the more of it I listen to again, especially when I see the videos, the more I realize that it really was an awful time. Maybe not as bad as the 70's, but really pretty awful.

Well, perhaps that's the ultimate source of all our differences, Matt. I actually think the 70s, all things considered, were pretty awesome. If I could tune in a radio station and hear Pink Floyd followed by the Eagles followed by James Taylor followed by the Commodores followed by Blondie followed by Dolly Parton followed by the Rolling Stones followed by Seals and Croft, I'd be darn happy.

I agree with your assessment of 70s music, Russell. And 70s cinema may be my favorite.
