Melissa didn't get it at first; I had to ask her leadingly: "And what do Statler and Waldorf do from the balcony?" "Heckle," she said--and then she started laughing so hard she almost fell over.
I am sorry, but this must be an inside joke. I have been waiting all day for some discussion that might give away the secret. But I give up! What is the punchline?
Very basically, you've got a mash-up of two pop culture references here. In the lower left hand corner you have the characters from Mystery Science Theater 3000, a cable show in which an actor and a couple of robots watched really atrocious old movies and made jokes and snide comments about them. In other words, they heckled the movie. And Statler and Waldorf, of course, were the Muppets up in the balcony who watched and heckled the action on the old Muppet Show. Put them together, and you have an infinite loop (hence the infinity sign) of mutual heckling.
Thankyou so much! I didn't get the reference to the Mystery Science Theater. I must now be watching the right TV shows. Now I get it and it seems a little bit like a geeky computer programmer joke.(Which I can appreciate)
It's pretty hard not to just think that this is going to be the highlight of my day, and go back to bed before it all goes downhill from here!
